Verstappen creates a sensation at Toro Rosso in Monaco
Second fastest behind Lewis Hamilton in FP1, Max Verstappen created a sensation on this first day of free practice at the Monaco Grand Prix. A little further back, Carlos Sainz Jr was nonetheless very consistent.
It’s been a long time since a Toro Rosso climbed so high on the timesheet of an official session. Confirming their strong form at the start of the season, the men from Faenza, led by young Max Verstappen, were on the heels of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes in FP1.
Finishing FP2 in second place is a really great feeling! exclaimed the Dutchman on Thursday evening. It’s a shame that the rain appeared this afternoon: we couldn’t do all the laps we wanted. But we still finished in seventh place, which isn’t too bad.
Carlos Sainz also made a good impression by securing a 5th and 6th place in the two sessions. Enough to satisfy the Spaniard: « Driving a Formula 1 car for the first time in Monaco is really something special, and I have been waiting for this for many years. In terms of performance, it was not too bad and even better than we expected for a first day. The car feels good, and I am quite confident. »
