Michelin confirms its intention to return to F1 in 2017
The French company Michelin has decided to respond favorably to the FIA's call for tenders for the supply of tires in Formula 1 starting from the 2017 season.
The tender for the supply of tires for Formula 1 starting from the 2017 season and for a duration of three years was launched several weeks ago by the FIA. Besides Pirelli, which wishes to continue its collaboration with the pinnacle of motorsport, there were rumors that Michelin might be interested in making a comeback.
It’s now official as the French company has confirmed they responded positively to the tender, as indicated by their director Pascal Couasnon to our colleagues at Autosport: « Yes, we have entered the market. The reasoning is that we proposed ideas, discussed them with Formula 1, and the result is that we are disappointed, especially with how the tire is used too conservatively today. »
« If we want to be credible and consistent, then we can’t just complain and comment without providing solutions. So, it is normal, in my opinion, to say that if we have ideas, then let’s go ahead and propose these ideas, and we will see if people are interested or not. At least, no one can say to us: “well guys, you talk, but you don’t act.” Now, we are taking action. » he continues.
Michelin wants to push the idea of using tires with an 18-inch diameter, as opposed to the current 13-inch: « This proposal is still relevant. More than ever » confirms Couasnon.
« By making a proposal, we are trying to change the situation a little. We believe that the current image of tires in Formula 1 is not what we would like to do, and it doesn’t make sense. The tire, used as an object you throw away after a few laps, is not really something good for the tire industry. » adds the French director of the company based in Clermont-Ferrand.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans race last weekend adds fuel to Michelin’s fire: « We believe there is another way to ensure a good show, as we saw this weekend (at Le Mans), with high-tech, durable tires that have good grip ».
