The teams would like a longer summer break
The teams participating in the Formula 1 World Championship would like to have a longer summer break. They believe that it is vital at all levels for the proper functioning of the discipline.
The three-week break between the Hungarian Grand Prix and the Belgian Grand Prix this year doesn’t seem to be enough for the teams, who would like to have a longer pause, as was the case a few years ago.
Red Bull’s sporting director, Christian Horner, is among the supporters: « I think taking a break is something important. Formula 1 is very demanding for the people involved in the discipline, not just the technicians and staff at the factory, but also for the entire support team, the FOM, the media… It’s important to have a moment to catch your breath. »
Team directors have even made a request to Bernie Ecclestone to organize longer break periods: « This is something we discussed with Bernie and, as we often see, the calendar changes a lot before October. There are a lot of races planned in a fairly short period of time, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a few small changes. »
On the McLaren side, Eric Boullier seems to be on the same wavelength as his British counterpart: “We need to have a summer break for all the people who travel. We are discussing when it could take place and how long it could last,” the Frenchman told our colleagues at Motorsport.com.
Another historic team agreeing on the matter is Williams, for whom the investment of its team members would indeed deserve a bit of rest during the year: “The calendar is long and arduous,” comments Claire Williams. “Everyone gives their heart and soul to the race and sacrifices a lot for it. For two weeks each month, nothing else matters. And we must allow them to be with their families and have a semblance of a normal life.”
