McLaren: Alonso wants to keep Button by his side
The McLaren team has not yet announced who will be Fernando Alonso's teammate next season. However, the Spaniard would like the British team to keep Jenson Button by his side.
If Fernando Alonso is tied to the McLaren team for a few more years, his current teammate, Jenson Button, is still not sure about continuing the adventure with the British team.
Kevin Magnussen or Stoffel Vandoorne are knocking on the door of the main drivers at Woking, but if Alonso had to choose between these three men, he would prefer to keep Button: « Jenson has been very good throughout the season. We work very well together to help the team. His experience is very, very important for the developments we bring to the car, both in terms of engine power and aerodynamics. So if Jenson stays, it will be beneficial for the team. »
This is as clear as it gets for the Spaniard, who will not contest McLaren’s choice, whatever it may be: « If they decide to change, I suppose there will be advantages and disadvantages to the situation. They will make their decision judging what is best for the team, and I hope they do it before Christmas. »
« But all I can say, the only thing I am sure of, is that working with Jenson has been very productive for the team and for myself. We have learned a lot… working with other guys, I can’t really say more… » he concluded.
Last year, Jenson Button’s contract was extended very late, sidelining the young Kevin Magnussen after only one season as a main driver for McLaren.
