An instructive day for Vettel and Ferrari
Not everything is to be discarded from this first day of free practice at the Australian Grand Prix for Ferrari. Despite the rain, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen were able to gather important data.
The sun made its appearance in Melbourne just after the final moments of FP2. This added a bit more frustration for the drivers who didn’t have the opportunity to do much driving during these first two free practice sessions of the season.
However, Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari prefer to see the glass half full: The sun came out after the tests, but enough rain had fallen to wet the track earlier in the day. Of course, these conditions are not ideal, but in the end, what can we do about it? It was the same for everyone! So, I don’t think the day was really wasted. It was good to be able to do a few laps and feel the car, but in terms of preparation for this weekend, there wasn’t much to learn.
Kimi Räikkönen also shares his teammate’s opinion and regrets that this first day did not provide him with more information: « It’s really a shame that we couldn’t run in normal conditions. For all the spectators and for us. The car behaves the same as during winter testing but here we were able to test it in wet conditions and it seems to be performing well too. »
