Official: Felipe Massa to leave F1 at the end of the season
At a press conference held in the Williams motorhome on the sidelines of the Italian Grand Prix, Felipe Massa announced his retirement from Formula 1 at the end of the current season.
Felipe Massa called a press conference this Thursday morning in the Williams motor-home to announce his decision to retire from Formula 1 at the end of the current season.
As a symbol, the Brazilian announces his departure from Formula 1 in Italy, at Monza, a land dear to him after his notable stint with Ferrari for eight seasons. His decision comes exactly ten years after Michael Schumacher’s announcement, also at Monza, to leave F1 and Ferrari (before returning a few years later with Mercedes), thus allowing the Brazilian, then his teammate, to remain with the Scuderia following the signing of Kimi Räikkönen.
Felipe Massa, very moved, notably declared: “I am very proud of my career. I accomplished more than I thought I could do.”
In the evening of the Belgian Grand Prix, the Brazilian had 242 race starts, 11 victories, 16 pole positions, and 41 podiums. His best season remains undoubtedly that of 2008 when he was, for a few seconds, world champion before Lewis Hamilton snatched the title from him in the final corner of the Interlagos circuit.
