Renault unveils the RS17
Renault unveiled its new single-seater for the 2017 season this afternoon. The RS17 will be driven by Jolyon Palmer and newcomer Nico Hülkenberg.
It’s live from London that the Renault team has chosen to unveil the RS17, the latest creation from the French team that will participate in the 2017 Formula 1 season.
After a year of relative learning in 2016 following its acquisition of Team Lotus, the team with the diamond logo wants to make 2017 a cornerstone of its future success in the discipline. The recruitment of a top driver like Nico Hülkenberg is also a strong sign of Renault’s desire to return to the top.
Alongside the two main drivers, Sergei Sirotkin takes the position of reserve driver. The Russian, who will participate in the GP2 championship during the season, can therefore replace one of the main drivers in case of an issue. Additionally, Alain Prost becomes a special advisor for Renault and will be present at many Grand Prix events, as usual.
Just like the Sauber, the Renault has the shark fin on the engine cover. An aerodynamic solution that many teams seem to have chosen and which could therefore be found on other single-seaters by the end of the week.
Freed, it seems, from the performance lag of its hybrid power unit, Renault is starting on solid ground to aim for more than just honorable mentions this year. Despite Frédéric Vasseur’s departure during the off-season due to differences of opinion, the team doesn’t appear to be affected by this slight restructuring, and a few podiums are even expected to confirm Renault’s return to the forefront.
