Lewis Hamilton “very happy” with his victory and “proud” of Valtteri Bottas
The British Grand Prix was a perfect weekend for Lewis Hamilton, who won the race after leading it from start to finish, and for the Mercedes team, which achieved another one-two with Valtteri Bottas in second place.
Harshly criticized for his absence during the demonstration on the streets of London last Wednesday, Lewis Hamilton responded in style by achieving the Grand Slam: pole position, victory, fastest lap, and leading every lap – to claim victory at the British Grand Prix, in front of his home crowd.
A perfect weekend for the British champion: « I’m so happy … this must be one of my finest victories here. I really wanted this win. There were so many negative comments before the race, people were questioning my preparation for the race. But this weekend has been one of my strongest weekends. I got a good start and then managed the car and the balance, and the guys performed a fantastic pit stop. I really can’t find a fault in the whole weekend. The team did an exceptional job. »
Hamilton also makes sure to acknowledge the work of his teammate, Valtteri Bottas, who finished second in the race after starting from ninth position: « Valtteri clearly had a lion’s heart today [Sunday], I’m proud of him. It’s great to have him on the team. »
To which the Finn responds enthusiastically: « What a race! I am really happy for us as a team to get the second one-two of the season. Of course, I would have liked to win, but I am happy anyway because it was definitely one of my best races. I had to fight hard several times, but I finished in a good position. » explains Bottas.
This victory puts Hamilton back in the running for the Drivers’ Championship, placing him just one point behind Vettel, who was unfortunate in the race but still leads the standings: “I’m surprised to see Ferrari’s problems because I didn’t see any debris on the track. I didn’t expect to leave this weekend just one point behind Sebastian. This result really opens up the championship,” explains Hamilton, before paying tribute to his family, friends, supporters, and young Billy Monger, who was present throughout the weekend in the paddock: “I have a lot of supporters here, not only in the crowd but also in the garage. My brother was here, some of my aunts and my family came too. There’s this amazing young boy from South Africa, Michael, who’s battling cancer. It was incredible to see him. And Billy Monger was with us, he is a true inspiration,” concludes the race winner.
